This programme leads to a BTEC level 3 qualification in dental reception. This qualification is the result of the student's learned and existing knowledge and skills, in addition to the development and application of their formal administration reception skills. The course has been developed to meet the needs of both new and experienced receptionists, irrespective of whether their previous experience is in dentistry or in any other area of health care
About The Qualification
This 9 month qualification is a part of the BTEC (Business and Technology Education Council) Professional Development Award framework and is equivalent to an advanced GNVQ (level 3). The award is made through the Edexcel Foundation, which combined the skills and experience of two nationally recognised bodies. BTEC, a leading provider of applied vocational qualifications, and London Examinations, one of the major GCSE and GCE examining boards.
The qualification is the result and acknowledgement of students exiting knowledge and skills, plus the development and application of their formal administration and reception skills. The course has been developed to meet the needs both of new and experienced receptionists irrespective of whether their previous is in dentistry or any other area of health care.
Unit One: Role Of Dental Receptionist
This unit develops students understanding of the inter-action of dental professionals in the dental team. It looks at the legal framework that is in place for the protection of the public and how these impact upon appropriate duties for team members. It examines individual roles and enables the student to identify appropriate communication techniques to ensure smooth running of dental services.
Unit Two: Dental Reception Administrative Skills
This unit provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform administrative tasks to a high standard. It examines methods of measuring the effectiveness of existing systems. Provides an overview of computer applications for practice administration. Considers legislative and safety aspects of handling money and maintaining cash flow whilst reducing the occurrence of bad debts.
Unit Three: Aspects of Patient Care
This unit develops the students understanding of appropriate responses to patients needs. Outlining patients’ rights and encouraging students to evaluate the ways in which these, rights can be integrated into their work place. Thus ensuring an appropriate balance between the needs of purchaser and provider. It enables learners to consider and develop their own skills when dealing with unreasonable demands from either patients or other members of the dental team.
Unit Four: Professional Development
This unit looks at professional development opportunities for dental receptionists and encourages receptionists to set and follow a formal professional development plan consistent with the development requirements placed on registered dental professionals
Generating Evidence
To gain the award learners are required to produce evidence in the form of:
- The production of a reception manual
- The production of a work based portfolio
Time Commitment
Over a 9 month period students will need to dedicate approx. 5 hours personal study per week .
Personal Study will run concurrent with day-to-day practice duties.
