This level 4 management qualification builds underpinning knowledge and evaluate skills in many areas of management . Learners are required to provide evidence of appropriate judgement in planning, selecting and presenting information to internal and external customers. At level 4 some of the managers day- to- day work is self -directed and some supervised by a senior manager. They will have responsibility for meeting specified quality standards and need a clear understanding of relevant general and dentally specific regulations, plus the ability to apply a high level of interpersonal skills to ensure observation of practice policy and protocols.
There are no formal entry requirements for this course, however students will need to complete an induction assignment, to ensure they will be able to produce work at the required level
About the Qualification
Course is a Business and Technology Education Council( BTEC) a Level 4 qualification awarded through the Edexcel Foundation. It is first of two levels of diploma qualification and acknowledges students existing skills and the development and application of formal management techniques. The course has been developed to meet the needs both of new and existing managers irrespective of whether their previous experience is a dental management environment. it represents one year of study. Successful students may choose to further their studies and achieve the second level of this qualification,.
This award can be achieved through workshops or Open Learning studies.
All students are allocated a tutor who will support their learning throughout the course.
Unit 1- Management Skills for Dental Practice Managers
This unit clarifies the role and skills of practice managers within the framework of Standards for Dental professionals and management needs of dental organisations and determines how the Dentist Act has shapes practice management and consider their own needs and those of all other members of the practice to achieve business success.
Students will learn the skills of tactical management processes and are required to design, management projects with SMART objectives and using predetermined evaluation processes
in respect of staff development opportunities balancing the learning needs of staff the dental profession and budgetary constraints. They will research and prepare personnel
management policies
Unit 2- People Management in Dental Teams
In this unit, further clarifies people management techniques, looking at leadership studies to recognise the strengths and weaknesses of key leadership styles in a range of situations,
and establishing the importance motivating the team and creating a proactive ‘can do’ team culture.
Measuring the results of personnel management initiatives is essential and students will use analytical skills to assess the extent to which their polices and procedures make the best use of management resources, distribute tasks and involve colleagues through delegating work.
Unit 3- Managing Systems for Team Communication
This unit demonstrates how communications within the dental team flourishes in an
environment of respect and equal opportunities. Looking at process of communication to consider ways to analyse communication outcomes.
It examines the role of organisations in developing policies and procedures to ensure the distribution of information and explores the best methods of communication for contractual information and for recording information communicated in respect of patients needs and measures to safeguard patients’ rights in respect of Data Protection and confidentiality will be identified and implemented
Students will study theories of transactional analysis to establish ways to predict and
prepare for actions and interactions.
Unit 4- Marketing Dental Services
This unit relates established marketing theories in the context of dental organisations, considering appropriate ways of applying the Marketing Mix, using the skills of the
Tactical Management process to follow through a marketing initiative.
Highlighting how to set targets, use range of market research techniques to determine the needs of the internal and external market, identify resources, financial constraints and product pricing. On completion of the time-measured span of the SMART
objectives, an analysis of both objective and subjective results will be completed.
Unit 5- Managing Finance and Administration
This unit looks at aspects of financial management a key area in all businesses and requiring accurate and timely management. Students will learn how to forecast and monitor cash flow, using a calculated hourly rate to ensure the correct pricing of goods and services to ensure the financial viability of the business.
Students will learn about legal obligations imposed by both the Inland Revenue in
respect of record keeping and using the skills of quality audit in line with clinical
governance requirements essential to maximise effectiveness and financial success of the business.
Unit 6 - Managing Workplace Safety
This unit covers the essential points of workplace safety and well-being. Aggressive incidents reported in dental organisations are at an all-time high, with aggression from both patients, and at times from colleagues. We explore the rights and responsibilities of employers to conduct risk assessments and manage any risk impacting on the
well-being of staff.
Students will distinguish between different difficult behaviours, from patients whose demanding behaviour can be termed as ‘reasonable but unwelcome’, to those who place dental professionals at risk. Students will examine the training needs for staff and define practice polices for dealing with difficult, demanding and dangerous people
Generating Evidence
To gain the award, students are required to produce evidence of
outcomes in the form of:
O Work from case studies
O The production of documentation for workplace projects
O The production of policies
O The production of training documents for practice staff
Time Commitment
Approximately 7 hours personal study per week
Each unit is accredited with 60 study hours when completed
Some study will run concurrent with day-to-day practice duties.
